Families, friendship and fellowship are true foundations

To the editor:

The United States has a great deal to be thankful for. Yes, we are mired in debt, our social fabric is frayed and our families are broken. But still, we have much to be thankful for.

I am dismayed with the push of companies to start their sales on Thanksgiving, to open for business on a day that I feel should be devoted to family and friends, and, well, Thanksgiving.

When I checked, these stores included Sears, Wal-Mart, Target and Toys R Us. I have decided that I am going to boycott these business, through the end of November (though, I am leaning more through the end of the year).

In this time of trial, we should be encouraging families and friendship and fellowship; these are true foundations of a strong society. I hope you will join me in telling corporate America to slow down and consider something besides profit. Give your employees and neighbors a break.
