PALMER — The Valley showcased its multicultural riches at the Swanson Elementary School Community Family night Jan. 30.
Highlights from the school’s quarterly event included Alaska Native dancers, Chinese calligraphy and Alutiiq mask making.
Native Youth Olympic athletes from Palmer High and Palmer Junior Middle schools participated and competed in the high kick, astounding onlookers with their skills.
The Alaska Job Corps Native Dance group drummed and danced while children and families clustered near the stage. Later, the dancers joined guests to make masks and decorations to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
“We want to celebrate all of our diversities and similarities,” Swanson Elementary School Principal Mary Kate Mayer said.
The event has been planned several times, but weather had forced cancelations.
