PALMER — Local families from across the community enjoyed an evening of watching a Mat-Su Miners baseball game with free admission during the annual MEA Member Appreciation and Kids Night Wednesday, July 26.

"It's awesome. There's so many people here with their families and friends," MEA public relations manager Jennifer Castro said. "Baseball tends to bring everyone together."

MEA ran a booth near the concession area handing out free candy and merchandise. They also held a raffle for free bicycles. Castro said that MEA has sponsored this free family friendly event for over a decade.

"Our co-op is all about community. This is our fun summer event to show our members and their families that we appreciate them," Castro said.

Throughout the game, children played catch with their families and other children from the sidelines. Mat-Su Miners general manager Pete Christopher was thrilled to have so many families having a good time.

"That's what it's all about. Just look around, look at all the kids playing," Christopher said. "We work very hard to make sure we have a good atmosphere for the families."

Maggie Forbess went to the game with her daughter Millie Forbess. She said that she noticed a full parking lot when they pulled in.

"Definitely a good turnout for the Miners," Forbes said. "I enjoy coming to all their games."

Forbess said that she has a season pass, but there's numerous local families that haven't been to a Miners game and others that are trying to save money so having free admission is a great opportunity for them.

"That's excellent. It's awesome that they offer that," Forbess said.

"It's for all ages. It's entertaining," Forbess said.

The Miners regularly hold camps to teach the basics of baseball during the summer. Forbess said the team is very community minded and local children that enjoy baseball and want to learn more can learn a lot.

"They look up to them," Forbess said.

Chad Finch and his family snacked on food while watching the game together. He said this was a great opportunity for them and other local families.

"This is great family fun. Thanks to MEA for letting us in for free," Finch said.

Finch said they have watched the Miners numerous times over the years and they appreciate having the opportunity to have sporting events take place in the Valley so they don't have to drive to Anchorage.

"Having a semi pro team in town is awesome. The games are exciting, and it's fun for the kids," Finch said.
