ROBERT DeBERRY/Frontiersman Runners in the 4A Palmer Cross Country Invitational get into stride as they head off the field and onto the trail at Palmer High School on Saturday afternoon. More than 1,100 athletes competed in the cross country invitational.

PALMER — Jani Lane continues to stay one step ahead of Wylie Mangelsdorf.

Last season, during the ASAA/First National Bank 4A on the Michael Janecek Running Trails at Palmer High School, Lane edged the Palmer runner at the finish line by just two-tenths of a second.

And on Saturday, back on the Janecek Trails, it was Lane by a lean once again.

The Service High School athlete needed a late sprint to edge Mangelsdorf by three-tenths of a second to claim second place in the boys 4A race of the 2009 Palmer Invitational.

“It was really close, and he’s the same one who got me at state,” Mangelsdorf said. “It’s kind of funny.”

Mangelsdorf, a Palmer senior, clocked an official time of 15 minutes and 56.52 seconds, just a hair shy of Lane’s 15:56.31.

Both trailed winner Dylan Anthony of Kodiak by about 14 seconds when they hit the Palmer High School track for the final stretch of the race. And both found themselves locked in a complete sprint as they headed do the chute toward the finish line.

“I think he was holding back, which is what I did too,” Mangelsdorf said. “He picked it up again and it just came down all the way to the finish.”

Anthony emerged as the leader during the second lap of the five-kilometer course. But before that, runners from East and West paced the field.

East Anchorage’s Nathaniel Knapp led during the first mile, with Mangelsdorf in second and Anthony in third. West’s Nick Treinen moved into first near the start of the second lap, as Knapp ran in second and Mangelsdorf held third.

But on the third lap, Anthony continued to build a lead, while Lane moved into second with Mangelsdorf right on his heels.

Regardless of his finish, Mangelsdorf was thrilled with his time, a new personal best. It was also the first time the Palmer standout broke the 16-minute barrier.

Led by Lane, one of three Cougars in the top five, Service won the boys team title with 46 total points, well-ahead of second-place Juneau-Douglas (91) and third-place South Anchorage (119). Mangelsdorf helped the Moose place fifth in the team standings.

Senior Drew Ford led Wasilla to a seventh-place finish in the team standings with his 15th-place finish in the race.

At 23rd, senior Dylan Crawford was the first Colony runner to cross the finish line.

Palmer’s Mason Minturn (19th) and Jacob Whipple (20th) also finished in the top-20 for the Moose.

In the 4A girls race, defending state champion Leah Francis of Juneau-Douglas won her second straight Palmer Invitational title.

Francis finished 17 seconds ahead of second-place Jenna Ford, but needed a significant push midway through the race to create a gap between herself and the Wasilla freshman.

“She stretched it out pretty good between mile two and three,” Wasilla head coach Gary Howell said.

Francis and Ford ran together for more than a mile early in the race, well ahead of the remainder of the 114-runner field. Ford said somewhere during the second lap Francis was able to move ahead.

“She’s good,” Ford said.

Ford’s finish marks the first time she ended a race as the runner-up during her prep career. She’s finished first in each of the other events she’s competed in this season.

“I think Jenna’s tough, really tough,” Howell said of Ford, who has won races at Colony, Seward, Skyview and Kodiak this year. “I guess I didn’t realize how tough Leah was.”

Despite the time gap, Ford did test the defending state champ. At several points during the race, Francis looked backward to see exactly where the Warrior freshman was.

“This is the first time anyone has tested (Francis) in a long time,” Howell said. “She really knows what she’s doing and that showed. She sucked Jenna into a fast start and Leah had the strength to recover from that. Leah’s just extremely seasoned.”

Ford’s time of 19:02.37 was a personal record, and she was one of six Warriors who finished the Palmer Invite with a personal best. Thanks to those times, Wasilla finished with 117 total points. Colony also finished with 117 points, and finished in second place via the tiebreaker. The Warriors officially finished third.

While Francis and Ford stayed at the front of the pack for the majority of the race, a pack of runners consistently traded spots in the lower half of the top-10 throughout the race.

Lathrop’s Megan Edic, West Valley’s Marisa Rorabaugh, Kodiak’s Chloe Ivanoff, Soldotna’s Bree Mucha and Colony’s Alyssa Hutchins continued to trade spots in the top-10 during the race.

Hutchins, Colony’s top runner in the Invite, bounced anywhere from sixth to eighth during the first two laps of the race. During the final stretch, Mucha — the 2008 4A runner-up at the state meet — needed a late sprint to edge Hutchins at the finish line by just one second.

“We were going back and forth during the race,” Mucha said. “And then she was ahead of me, and I was like, no, I have to catch her. I just kicked it into gear and ran as fast as I could.”

Mucha finished eighth in the race, and Hutchins was ninth with a time of 19:32.

Wasilla’s Mandi Ringenberg (12th) and Colony’s Audrey Michaelson (23rd) also finished in the top 25.

With 44 teams and nearly 1,100 runners, the Palmer Invitational is sort of a preview for the 2009 state championships, which will also be hosted by Palmer High School on the Michael Janecek Running Trails.
