There is still time for people interested in serving as elected officials to throw their hats into the ring for the upcoming Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) Mayor and Assembly elections, as the deadline is Friday, August 30.

In District 3, incumbent Dee McKee is facing two challengers- Steve Ault and Luke Hyce-for the MSB assembly seat. Meanwhile, in District 6, Dmitri Fonov is currently unopposed. Both assembly seats are for a 4-year term ending November 2028.

In District 7, current MSB assemblyman Ron Bernier will be running against Sheena Fort of Willow.

In Wasilla, incumbents Cathy Cottle and Stuart “Stu” Graham are running unopposed for three-year terms, ending November 2027.

In Palmer, there are two open council seats for three-year terms up for election, with five candidates vying for the spots. They include John Alcantra, Nathan Bradford, Jameson Corbin, Victoria Hudson, and Aundra “Omega” Jackson.

Over in Houston, there are three seats on city council up for election, with Kent Mitchell in Seat D and Laurie Faubert in Seat G running unopposed, while Carter Cole in Seat C and serves as the Mayor is being challenged by Wayne Oliver. Of note, as Houston is a second-class city, the residents do not vote for the position of Mayor. Once the council is certified, they determine the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Finally, in the Mat-Su School Board, longtime District 1 member Tom Bergey is facing Ben Kolendo, while Brooks Pitcher, who represents District 5 is running unopposed. District 4 representative Jubilee Underwood is currently running for State House and is not listed on the candidate list. Andrew Shane is running for that spot.

The Borough’s regular election date is on the first Tuesday, following the first Monday, in November. The 2024 regular election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.

The cities of Houston, Palmer, and Wasilla hold elections on the first Tuesday in October, which will be October 1, 2024. Please contact the respective city should you have questions regarding a city election. The MSB elections will be held on Tuesday, November 5.
