WASILLA - The final tally is in, and more than 71 percent of voters opted to recall city councilman Steve Menard from office.

The city's canvassing board met Friday afternoon to count the 94 early, mail-in and absentee ballots cast, making the final unofficial numbers 279 in favor of the recall and 112 against. Of the 402 ballots received by the city, 11 could not be counted, the city clerk's office reports.

Wasilla City Council will be asked to certify the election at its regular meeting on Monday, at which time Menard will officially step down from the council.
