Fire north of Wasilla grows to 42 acres

A wildfire just north of Wasilla has grown to 42 acres as of Saturday evening, according to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry.

The fire, in the Moose Meadows Road area, was initially reported just before 2:30 p.m. Moose Meadows Road is off of Schrock Road via North Sushana Drive and Schwald Road. More than 60 people and six different tactical aircraft are battling the fire. Crews have been able to “box in” the fire, according to forestry officials, with retardant drops.

“The cause of the fire is unknown at the time, but fire managers said it is a human-caused fire, given the fact that no lightning was reported in the area,” forestry officials said in an update Saturday.

The more than 60 personnel include the Pioneer Peak Hotshot and Gannett Glacier Fire crews, Mat-Su Area Forestry Firefighters and the West Lakes Fire Department.
