The Big Lake community will host a meeting of one of the nation’s leading organizations in wildfire preparedness Oct. 6. A community Firewise presentation is from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lakeshore Studio in the East Lake Mall.

Saturday morning, the National Fire Protection Association’s Firewise Communities Program will survey the Horseshoe Lake community to view the work done to reduce wildfire fuels near homes, such as tree thinning, shrubbery and other vegetation. The community’s efforts have earned it a designation as an officially Firewise Community.

The area saw firsthand the destructive nature of wildfires when 400 structures in the area were destroyed in the 1996 Miller’s Reach Fire, the costliest fire in state history.
