Flood advisory extended for Mat-Su Borough

MAT-SU — Property owners and recreational users along small streams in the Matanuska and Susitna valleys are advised to be aware of high water and take necessary precautions due to rain and runoff from snowmelt in the Talkeetna Mountains.

The National Weather Service in Anchorage extended its small stream flood advisory for melting snow in the Mat-Su Borough through 4 p.m., Sunday.

Runoff from snowmelt in the Talkeetna Mountains have caused the Talkeetna River, Montana Creek, Willow Creek, Little Susitna River, Matanuska River, Nenana River and other streams to rise significantly over the past several days. Currently some streams are reported to be full in the vicinity of the Parks Highway, according to the weather service advisory.

U.S. Geological Survey in streamflow gauges at Gold Creek and Sunshine show water at flood-levels at 2 p.m., Sunday. See Alaska streamflow data online at bit.ly/12Z0bLI.

The Nenana River is reported flowing across the Denali Highway at Mile 120 and washouts have occurred at several locations. Water level increases are possible through Sunday. High water and some minor flooding are possible through Sunday.

The flood advisory says people should be cautious in low-lying areas and report any minor flooding to local law enforcement.

Rain is in the forecast through Saturday, according to weather service forecasts.
