ANCHORAGE — A federal judge sentenced a man known for 20 years as “Michael Camp” to 14 years in prison Monday for an assortment of felonies, according to court documents.

Court documents say Joseph Keenan May, 60, assumed the identity of his dead step-brother shortly after fleeing Florida in 1990 to avoid prosecution for charges of capital sexual battery against a child, authorities said. In the years since the former county sheriff deputy fled the state, he acquired and obtained a federal firearms license, allowing him access to numerous firearms, which he said intended to use in a “homicidal, if not genocidal, race and religious war,” according to a sentencing report filed by federal prosecutors.

May had listed Alaska residences in Houston and Eagle River, where he was arrested last year.

May faced the death penalty on those charges in 1990, when law enforcement officials recorded him admitting sexual activity with an unidentified minor, according to the sentencing report. He now faces a minimum sentence of 25 years.

Among the three-dozen weapons May possessed were rifles inscribed with nicknames like “Sweet Lips,” “Weeper,” and “Angel Fire;” crossbow bolts tipped with improvised grenades; hand grenades; and other explosive devices, according to the sentencing report, which includes photos of numerous rifles and machine guns.

Other evidence included in the report includes photocopies of a journal May kept, including a single page of reflections for how to make amends with his alleged Florida victim.

“Talk to her, ask forgiveness, offer lifetime support to her,” May wrote. “!Be honest!”

Other writings detail May’s belief that “Muslim, Communist sympathizers have taken over America,” and contain his efforts to prepare for an “endworld scenario.”

“I know that half the population of the USA thinks that is an insane act,” May wrote.

Another entry outlines May’s vision for an America after a “Revolution.”

“No one will be allowed to free load, we won’t tolerate drug addicts or drunkards,” he wrote. “Work or starve. Pedophiles will be executed (the) same day they are convicted, so will murderers (and) rapists. No long appeals, no life sentences.”

Officers also found child pornography among May’s possessions, according to the report.

U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler had asked the presiding judge for a 25-year sentence, citing the severity of May’s crimes.

“Joseph May must never walk free again,” Loeffler wrote. “The danger he presents to children, to those whose religion he despises, and to his government is too great. This is the most important sentencing factor in this case. Although he may well be convicted and receive a long prison term in Florida, we cannot know that now. We must act now to protect the public. That duty requires a long prison term.”

May ultimately received 10 years for the weapons and pornography charges, and four years for a single count of identity theft, court documents show.

May pleaded guilty in September 2014 to a total of eight felonies. He remained in custody at the Cook Inlet Pretrial facility Thursday afternoon, corrections documents show.
