WASILLA — Food Bank of Alaska is joining Feeding America along with member food banks across the state for Hunger Action Month, working to inspire people to join the fight to end hunger and raise awareness of people experiencing food insecurity.

According to a recent press release, Hunger Action Month runs through September with food banks around the United States working to make a real and lasting impact on hunger in their communities and asking for the public’s support.

“This year’s Hunger Action Month coincides with an increase in the level of need we are seeing in Alaska, due to rising costs,” Food Bank of Alaska CEO Jim Baldwin stated in the press release. “Your support is needed now more than ever, so please consider helping us fight hunger by donating, volunteering, or advocating.”

This year is the 15th anniversary of this annual campaign that features a national network of 200 food banks, including Food Bank of Alaska, and 60,000 partner food pantries and meal programs.

“Many people may not give a daily meal much thought. For people facing hunger, a daily meal is not as simple,” Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot stated in the press release. “Instead, it becomes a different type of choice — an impossible decision between food or other crucial needs, such as electricity, childcare, or medicine. Nobody should be forced to make a choice to go hungry. With the public’s support, we can come together to help increase food access for all people, so they no longer have to make such tough decisions.”

Alaskans can get involved by learning, committing, and speaking up about ways to end hunger throughout the month of September.

Friday, September 23 is Hunger Action Day.
