PALMER — A pair of former Alaska Avalanche defensemen dished out helpers during the first weekend of the Division I hockey postseason.
Minnesota sophomore Jake Parenteau recorded an assist during a 2-1 win over Alaska Anchorage on Friday. Parenteau and the Golden Gophers skated to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association first-round sweep with a 7-3 win over UAA on Saturday.
Parenteau, who ranks seventh on the Avs all-time scoring list with 68 points, skated with the team in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.
UAA includes former Avs forward Tyler Currier and goalie Dusan Sidor. Currier, the Avs fourth all-time leading scorer with 84 points, played in both games
North Dakota freshman Dan Senkbeil contributed an assist during a 4-3 win over Bemidji State on Saturday. The Fighting Sioux secured the WCHA first-round sweep with the win.
Senkbeil spent last season with the Avalanche.
Former Alaska goalie Landon Peterson is a member of a Wisconsin team that is tied 1-1 in a WCHA first-round series with Denver. Peterson, who is 5-6-0 with an .896 saves percentage, did not start either game.
Peterson is Alaska’s career franchise leader in wins, saves and games played.
A handful of former Avs also skated in the quarterfinals of the Division III national tournament.
Four players with Avs ties are on a Gustavus Adolphus team that fell 4-1 to defending champion St. Norbert in the quarterfinals. Former Avalanche players Andy Pearson, Zach May, Tyler Schwartz and Cory Belisle all play for the Golden Gusties.
Pearson is the Avs’ ninth all-time leading scorer with 58 points. He is also seventh in career games with 104.
Former Avalanche blueliner Reed Rushing is a member of a Wentworth squad that suffered a 3-0 quarterfinal loss to Norwich Saturday. Rushing played 60 career games with the Avalanche in 2006-07 and part of the 2007-08 season.
Former Alaska Avs goalie Nathan Corey is still alive in the DIII tourney. His Amherst team beat Plattsburgh 3-1. Corey, who spent the 2007-08 season with the Avs, is a junior reserve goalie with the Lord Jeffs.
