Former Colony High School standout wins Crow Pass Crossing

EAGLE RIVER — Former Colony High School running and skiing standout Eric Strabel captured the men’s title in the Crow Pass Crossing on Saturday.

Strabel crossed the finish line at the Eagle River Nature Center at the 3-hour, 9-minute and 2-second mark to win the 25th annual race that leads adventurous endurance athletes across Crow Pass, from Girdwood to Eagle River.

“I’m really happy with it,” Strabel, a past Crow Pass champion, said in a press release issued by the University of Alaska Anchorage athletics, the sponsor of the event. “If anything the victory is more rewarding than 200. I had to fight a lot more for this one.”

Strabel, who also starred at UAA as part of the Seawolf cross country running and skiing programs, narrowly beat runner-up Patrick Stinson, who finished just 35 seconds behind.

Max Treinen (third, 3:13:15), Geoff Roes (fourth, 3:17:53), Matias Saari (fifth, 3:22:14) rounded out the top five for the men.

Eeva Latosuo, of Anchorage, was the top female in the event, posting a time of 4:02:46. Latosuo finished nearly three minutes ahead of Jaime Bronga, a 2008 East Anchorage High School graduate who will compete at UAA this fall.

Paige Brady (third, 4:07:42), Greta Lewanski (fourth, 4:07:55) and Abby Rideout (4:12:43) also finished in the top-five of the women’s standings.

The race, a fund-raiser for the UAA cross country running and track and field booster clubs, covers about 24 miles of rigorous terrain. In order to be an official finisher in the event, runners must not surpass the six-hour mark. More than 90 men and nearly 30 women were able to cross the finish line in less than six hours.
