Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Frederick M. Almandinger died June 10, 2004, at home at the age of 62.
Mr. Almandinger was born on Dec. 13, 1941. He moved to Alaska in 1975 to work on the pipeline at the Tonsina Camp. He and his family moved to Afognak in 1977 and then moved to Kodiak in 1982. While in Kodiak he worked for Peter Kiewit and Sons as well as Brechan Enterprises. In 1997, he became the shop foreman for Brechan Enterprises. He retired in 2002 from the Local 302 Operating Engineers after 30 years. He then worked for Wal-Mart in Wasilla.
Mr. Almandinger leaves behind his wife, Myler, and three children, Rodney, Darryl and Darla; as well as five grandchildren, Ashton, Ryan, April, Gavin and Eric, all sons and daughters of his eldest son.
His family said, "He will be sorely missed and remembered lovingly by his family and friends."
A memorial will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m., at 780 N. Esty Drive in Palmer.
Friends suggest, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the "Offering of Love" box, which will be at the Celebration of Life ceremony. Envelopes will be provided and the box will go to Myler Almandinger to help with unexpected expenses.
