Freshman leads Knights in Seward Invite

SEWARD — If the Colony High School swimming program has a rookie of the year award, Jake Simmons might already have the honor wrapped up. The freshman continued to impress, winning a pair of events during the Seward Invitational in Seward Saturday.

Simmons, one of three Colony swimmers with two wins in the finals, finished first in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

With his time of 1 minute, 54.37 seconds, Simmons finished ahead of teammate Joseph Anderson, the runner-up, in the 200 freestyle. Anderson finished at 1:57.46. Colony’s Elliot Amato was fourth in the event.

Simmons also had about a three-second advantage in the 100 butterfly, winning the race in 55.63 seconds.

Zach Bloom cruised to wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, winning both races by about four seconds each. Anderson finished first in the 50 freestyle.

On the girls’ side, Colony’s Sierra Kinworthy scored two winnings, finishing first in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Camille Dayton (100 backstroke) and Rachel Crosley (100 freestyle) also enjoyed wins for the Knights.

The Colony girls won both the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. The Colony boys finished first in the 200 medley relay.

Colony, Palmer and Wasilla will be in the Valley this week to compete in the Valley Invitational at the Palmer Pool. Competition starts with the diving preliminaries on Thursday. Swimming preliminaries are on Friday. Finals are slated for Saturday.
