Friday Fling is fine

I love Palmer and I have lots of reasons why. Friday Fling, the open-air market held downtown every Friday from mid-May until the state fair, is certainly one of them. Now in its eighth year, Friday Fling brings crafters, farmers, butchers, bakers and candlestick makers (and food vendors, artists and musicians) together each week in the heart of the best little town on Earth for a celebration of everything Alaska.

The Fling’s new manager, Susan Fouch, is probably the most organized and capable person I could imagine for running this particular show, and if last Friday was any indication she’s going to do an amazing job.

The first Fling of 2010, Friday, May 14, was greeted with cold temperatures, gusting winds and very eager crowds ready to brave it all for their first taste of this summer tradition.

Personally, I love Friday Fling for three reasons. First, it’s a perfect place for me to get great local plant starts for my garden and indoor office garden during the spring and great produce from area farmers as the summer progresses. Second, the food usually ranges from good to amazing — including, among other things, a salmon burger so good I had to go back for seconds. The third and most important reason I love Friday Fling is the chance to talk with all the vendors and patrons. Friday Fling has become a community gathering place and is a time when everyone smiles a little easier and laughs a little louder.

If you haven’t been to Friday Fling in downtown Palmer, you really should come visit. If you’re a regular, I look forward to running into you next time while we browse the booths and catch up with old friends. Come rain or shine, it guarantees to be a good time had by all and is a great reason to love Palmer.
