PALMER — Thursday, North Pole managed only 11 points against Palmer’s stingy defense. The following day, Palmer continued the stellar play on the defensive side of the ball during a win over one of the top 3A teams in the state.
The Moose allowed only 14 total points in the second half, and Palmer posted a 59-36 victory over Anchorage Christian School during the second day of the Palmer Elks Showdown Friday night at Palmer High School.
The Moose led by seven at the half and blew the game open with a 23-6 third-quarter run. ACS finished with only five field goals during the second half.
Senior Clayton Southwick followed his 24-point performance in the 66-11 win over North Pole with a game-high 33 against ACS. The all-state talent scored 12 of his team’s 17 points in the first quarter, and hit one of Palmer’s four three-pointers during the 23-point third. Jacob Titus hit a trio of three-pointers and added nine points in the victory. Ronny Marshall chipped in eight.
Palmer, 2-0 in the Showdown, caps tourney play against Service Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Palmer High.
The Palmer girls bounced back from a loss to ACS on Thursday and grabbed a 55-34 victory over North Pole.
The Moose jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the game. Kassidy Bowman and Abrianna Busbey each hit three-pointers during the opening frame. Bowman led the Moose with a dozen. The well-rounded scoring attack also included Busbey, Sophia Benshetler and Jenna Sutton with nine points each.
Palmer, 1-1 in the tourney, concludes Showdown play against Ketchikan Saturday at 6:15 p.m. at Palmer High.
In other tournament action Friday, ACS, the defending 3A state champions used a three-pointer in the final seconds to edge Ketchikan 54-53. Service beat North Pole 79-50.
Wasilla girls beat Bartlett
Sparked by an early run, the Wasilla Warriors scored a 56-39 nonconference win Friday night at Bartlett.
The Warriors led 21-6 after the first quarter and 38-17 at halftime. Azlyn Brandenburg led Wasilla with 15 points. The senior was 9 of 14 from the free throw line. Olivia Davies added 11.
The Warriors are at East Anchorage Saturday afternoon.
Mustangs edge Wasilla boys
Tyler Trevino hit a late go-ahead three to help Chugiak edge Wasilla 34-33 during the semifinal round of the O’Brady’s Invitational Friday evening at South Anchorage.
Wasilla outscored Chugiak 10-6 during the final period, but the Mustangs were able to get the final opportunity to win the game. Aeron Milliron led the Warriors in scoring for the second straight day, finishing with 11 against the Mustangs. Jordan Knight added eight points and seven rebounds. Reilly Devine finished with six points and 10 boards.
With the loss, Wasilla drops into the third-place match and will face Bethel Saturday at 5:45 p.m. at South.
