Once considered a niche activity for bachelorette parties, paint nights have officially become a staple of 2026's local recreation option. From in-person studio events to virtual sessions that began during the pandemic to a homeschool art education option, the "do-it-yourself" art movement shows no signs of slowing down.
The popular ‘Paint Nights with Sara & Co’ in Wasilla is one such venue that has experienced a surge in popularity over the last seven years.
“The response from the community has been great, we have people coming in all the time,” she says, adding that they see new people coming in all the time, as well as loyal returning groups of people.
Armed with their own canvas, attendees of all ages and skill levels work with owner/artist Sara Squartsoff-McKinley or Studio Manager Laurie Lashlee to follow step-by-step instructions to create their own versions of snowy, wintry landscapes, fun gnomes, or Alaskan wildlife.
Squartsoff says that they are in the middle of their busy season now as the cold winter months often drive people inside, as well as winter breaks from school. Meanwhile, they are preparing for the return of students to their homeschool program, which has been blossoming since it began several years ago. “It’s been growing great over the past few years. Families have been really awesome.”
She says that the monthly art subscription boxes are also popular for homeschool students when families cannot make it into the studio. The boxes include three or more projects a month with step-by-step instructions and the tools and materials needed to complete the projects.
Squartsoff says a big part of the success is due to the staff who continue to be inspired with fun, creative project ideas while creating an open and welcoming atmosphere for all levels of artists. “They are amazing, their hard work and creativity are awesome.”
The studio also offers classes and workshops in other mediums in addition to acrylics, such as watercolors and alcohol inks, as well as creating ornaments and magnets. “We want to offer a chance for everyone to unleash their creativity.”
Also wildly popular are kids’ birthday parties, which gives kids the opportunity to choose the subjects to paint, ranging from Pokémon to characters from the MCU, to the popular Labubu.
Paint Night With Sara offers classes throughout the week, with schedules posted monthly, offering something for everyone. For more information and class schedules, please visit www.paintwithsara, call (907) 521-4094 or visit them on their Facebook page.
