MAT-SU — June, it seems, has been a dangerous month for local working stiffs trying to keep motorists from breaking the law.
According to an Alaska State Trooper press statement, at 2:07 p.m. June 14 in Willow, an employee of Willow Townsite Store reported trying to stop a shoplifter who “tried to back over the store attendant when leaving.”
The alleged shoplifter, Kizzy L. Johnson, 29, of Wasilla, was jailed on assault charges at the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility on $5,000 bail. Jail records Monday afternoon show she has since bailed out.
Wasilla police had a similar incident June 11 shortly after 2 a.m. involving a drunken woman in the parking lot of a local bar.
According to a Wasilla Police Department press release, “A bouncer and a cab driver at the Mug-Shot Saloon who had attempted to keep the woman from driving, stated that she had attempted to run them over as she was trying to leave the parking lot.”
She got away, but police tracked her to a home in the Mission Hills subdivision. The press release does not contain the woman’s name but says she was jailed at the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility in lieu of $5,000 bail.
Police seek joyrider
WASILLA — Wasilla police officers probably had a number of reasons to pull that dirt bike over before they even knew it was stolen.
According to a police press release, at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday an officer spotted the bike headed west on the Frontage Road. It did not have a license plate or any of the required lights.
“Upon initiating a traffic stop with emergency lights and sirens the motorcycle did not stop and a pursuit ensued,” according to the release.
After about two miles the driver fell off the bike, but was apparently unhurt — or not hurt enough to stay put. Police say he ran from the scene and they haven’t caught him yet. The bike turned out to have been stolen in Anchorage. Police impounded it.
Argument leads to stabbing
PALMER — Alaska State Troopers say a verbal argument turned physical and decidedly dangerous Saturday when a woman stabbed a man in the hip.
According to a trooper press statement, officers were called to the Mountain View RV Park at 5:47 a.m. Troopers say Stephanie A. Bush, 47, of Anchorage, had been arguing with a family member when she stabbed him.
The man was treated at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center and released.
Troopers believe alcohol played a role in the incident and are charging Bush with domestic violence assault. She was jailed at the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility pending arraignment. Jail records Monday afternoon show she has since bailed out.
Highway shooting rattles resident
PALMER — Errant gunfire isn’t likely the first worry of residents living along the Glenn Highway.
But around 12:25 a.m. on June 15, a 46-year-old Palmer man reported a bullet entered his home. He told Palmer Police officers he’d heard five to six gunshots coming from the highway.
Palmer Police report they checked the area and found a single empty shell casing near the highway.
