ANCHORAGE — A Houston man who was living for decades under the assumed name of his deceased stepbrother has pleaded guilty to all charges against him.

Joseph Keenan May, 60, was arrested June 20. He had homes in Houston and Eagle River and was arrested at the latter.

Federal prosecutors say that May lived under the identity of “Michael Camp” after fleeing Florida. Camp was May’s stepbrother. Camp died in 1973 and is buried in a Pennsylvania cemetery. May used Camp’s Social Security number to get an Alaska driver’s license in 2009 and to get unemployment benefits in 2013.

May was charged in 1990 with charges relating to numerous alleged instances between 1970 and 1977 when police and prosecutors say he had sex with a 6-year-old girl.

At the time he was charged, May had been working as a sheriff’s deputy. News accounts in Florida say he admitted some of the conduct in a police interview, then blew town after posting bail. A warrant for his arrest was issued in 1991.

The charges he faced in federal court were for unlawful use of a Social Security number, identity theft, being a fugitive in possession of a gun, unlawfully possessing a destructive device and making a false statement on a firearms license application.

He’s due to be sentenced on those charges on Nov. 24.

The sexual abuse of a minor charges in state court in Florida are much more serious and include counts that federal prosecutors say could carry the death penalty.
