A fund has been established at Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union to help Shawn Himes of Wasilla pay medical costs for injuries he suffered in a car crash last summer. Himes was riding in a car driven by Heather Simas that struck a four-wheeler at high speed and is paralyzed as a result.

The fund is No. 67867 at credit union outlets at Palmer, Wasilla, Seward-Meridian, Willow and Eagle River. Donations may be made in person or by check via the mail if the account number is included.

Lee Himes, Shawn's father, said his son had no insurance. His wife, Erin, and 5-year-old daughter, Tehya, are living in Florida while Shawn receives treatment here.

Lee Himes credited emergency medical personnel from Big Lake Volunteer Fire Department, particularly Lori Miner, and others from Meadow Lakes and Wasilla departments for outstanding work at the scene. "Without them, Shawn wouldn't be alive today," he said.
