WASILLA — A friend of a Wasilla family injured in a Thursday car wreck on the Glenn Highway near the Fort Richardson exit is taking donations to help with the family’s medical bills.
Olivia Blake, a 2009 graduate of Mat-Su Career and Technical High School, was heading home from Anchorage Thursday morning when she lost control of the red Mazda she was driving on icy roads and crossed the median into the southbound lanes of the Glenn Highway. Police said excessive speed contributed to the crash. Blake’s car collided with a gold Ford Explorer driven by Graysen Spiller of Eagle River.
Blake, her two children and Spiller were all transported to the hospital with what were officially described as “non-life-threatening injuries.” However, Blake’s younger sister, Isabella Blake, said her sister’s injuries were very serious.
On Saturday, Isabella said Olivia was intubated and sedated at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, suffering from at least a broken eye socket and a collapsed lung. No one had been able to speak with her as of Saturday morning.
“Her life is in a machine right now, and we don’t know what’s gonna happen,” Isabella said.
Olivia’s children, Brookelyn, 4, and Maddex, 16 months, also sustained serious injuries, she said. Brookelyn has had surgery to correct a broken leg, and was also recovering from a fractured collarbone as of Saturday morning. Both of Maddex’s legs are broken below the knees.
But it could’ve been worse, Isabella said.
“The baby’s car seat completely saved her life,” she said, of Maddex.
Isabella said both children were in car seats.
Olivia’s friend since high school, Stormy Boylan-Jara, started a GoFundMe.com account for the Blakes the night of the accident, with a goal of raising $10,000. As of Saturday morning, $4,265 had been donated.
Money can be donated to the Blake family online at https://www.gofundme.com/ycj6q8sk.
CORRECTION: This story has been corrected from its original version, which said Blake has two daughters. Bookelyn is a girl and Maddex is a boy.
