Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

George Joseph Spidel, 55, died July 31, 2005, at Ruthie's Place Assisted Living in Wasilla, of cancer of the mouth and throat. His ashes will be scattered at a later date over Hatcher Pass.
Mr. Spidel was born Oct. 4, 1949, in Hershey, Pa., to Paul E. and Dorothy (Cleary) Spidel. He graduated from Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg, Pa. He began his Alaska residency in 1998, living in Wasilla/Meadow Lakes. He worked as a cook. Mr. Spidel enjoyed gardening.
His family wrote, "George's kind heart, optimism, and courage were an inspiration to both his family and friends. He was an example to us all."
Mr. Spidel was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Dorothy; brothers, Edward and Charles, and sister, Gloria.
He is survived by his brothers, Paul Spidel of Harrisburg, Pa., and John Spidel of Palmyra, Pa., and sister, Pauline Spidel of Camp Hill, Pa.
Arrangements were with Kehl's Palmer Mortuary in Palmer.
