Longtime Alaska Resident, Mr. George William “Bill” Whitfield, 89, passed away at home on Friday, September 11, 2015, in Wasilla, Alaska.

Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at 1 p.m., at Summit Worship Center, 125 W. Riley Ave., Wasilla, Alaska, 99654. A plaque will be placed at Palmer Pioneer Cemetery at a later date.

Bill was born on October 4, 1925, in Corvallis, Oregon. Bill received his education from Northwest Bible College. He served his country in WWII. He moved to Alaska in 1950 where he would start many new adventures. For several years, Bill managed Cather Children’s Farm, which was backed by Assemblies of God Church. He worked at, and retired from, Johnson Fuel. Bill was part of the Summit Worship Center and Wasilla Lake Church of the Nazarene, where he served in the community throughout his life. He loved church and attending Bible study. He worked at the food bank run by Wasilla Lake Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed reading his Bible, playing friendly card games and doing what he could to help others.

U.S. Mission America Placement Service (MAPS) is the ministry of Assemblies of God U.S. Missions that coordinates volunteers to assist churches and ministry institutions with construction and evangelism projects. Bill volunteered with MAPS for many years, and he traveled all over the U.S. on different projects.

Bill was a “one-of-a-kind man.” Always ready to lend a helping hand to whomever needed a hand. He gave freely of his home and love. He was a friend to many people all over the United States. He will be greatly missed.

Bill is survived by daughters, Tancha McKnight of San Leandro, California, Rebecca Whitfield of Sacramento, California; grandson Julian Whitfield of Foster City, California; and sister, Evelyn Miller of Anchorage, Alaska.

Arrangements were under the direction of Valley Funeral Home, Wasilla Chapel.
