“You’re not born an Eagle Scout... and you don’t wake up one day and suddenly you’re an Eagle Scout,” reflected Giovanni Carollo. “It’s a long process, and you don’t even realize it’s happening.”

For Giovanni, reaching Eagle Scout was about the years of effort, challenges, and lessons that built the foundation for who he is now.

“When you put so much work into something, it’s really frustrating if all that work comes to no fruition,” Carollo said. “I made sure I finished the job.”

That determination is one of the defining traits of the Eagle Scouts journey.

“He started saying it in first grade,” his father, Jeff Carollo, recalled. “From the very beginning, he said his goal was to make Eagle Scout.” That focus never faded. “He’s driven,” Jeff said simply.

“My parents wanted me to be a scout,” Giovanni said. “My mom really believed in it and worked hard to make sure it happened.” That early encouragement set him on a path that would stretch across campouts, leadership roles, and merit badges.

Giovanni’s mother, Donna, worked behind the scenes in leadership roles, while Jeff served as an assistant scoutmaster. “We were all there,” Jeff said. “Every step of the way.”

Donna remembers, “When I found out I was going to have a boy, I dreamed he was going to be an Eagle Scout.” For Donna, seeing her son get the Eagle pinned on his chest is deeply personal. As a young girl, she wanted to be an Eagle Scout herself but couldn’t. “I was a Camp Fire Girl,” she said. “But I wanted to be an Eagle Scout. Why can’t I be one?” Her son, she believes, carried that dream forward. “He can have the dream I couldn’t have.”

For Jeff, the significance of Eagle Scout goes far beyond the ceremony. “It’s the first thing he’s completed that he’ll be able to use for the rest of his life,” Jeff said. “It’s like getting an extra degree early. You can use it for any job; it gives instant credibility, because everyone knows how hard it is to earn.”

“He brings that honor and that perspective into whatever he does next,” Donna said.

Giovanni said he strongly connects with Scouting’s core belief in helping others. “You’re going to hold the door open; of course you are,” he said.

For Giovanni, the values of service naturally extended into leadership, where he had to put those principles into action and guide others by example.

“Being an Eagle Scout is being the person who says, ‘Something needs leadership. I’m going to step up, and I’m going to be that leader,’” Giovanni said matter-of-factly.

When he became Senior Patrol Leader for his troop, the role challenged his assumptions.

“Leadership isn’t like you’re in charge,” he explained. “It’s to show everybody how you do things and hope for the best.”

From the beginning, Giovanni showed an uncommon commitment.

“Never once did he say he didn’t want to go to a meeting,” Donna said. Over time, Scouting became inseparable from who he was becoming. “It’s really a big part of who he has become. Scouts gave him the mindset to be where he is.”

Scouting shaped the Carollo family’s life together.

“We didn’t just talk about hiking Eska or going camping. We actually did it, and we did it with other families,” Said Donna.

Over the years, those families became something more. “They’re like extended family,” Donna said. “We were friends already, but we would have drifted apart. Because of Scouting, we kept coming together.” Scouting trips, she said, were family trips.

“I had the most fun with the waterfront merit badges—canoeing, kayaking, small boat sailing,” Giovanni said. “Everyone had a job. Everyone’s on the water, and it’s high stakes. You have to manage everything. I just loved that.”

Those hands-on experiences, full of teamwork and responsibility, were the moments that quietly shaped the Eagle Scout.

“Suddenly you realize all these experiences and all these people genuinely change you,” Giovanni reflected on his journey to Eagle Scout.

Giovanni is also the first person living in Sutton to earn the Eagle Scout rank; a distinction that makes the achievement even more meaningful. “There’s something unique about that,” Donna said.

Asked how he feels now that the journey is complete, Jeff didn’t hesitate. “I couldn’t be more proud of him,” he said. “It’s a dream, man!”
