During the Veterans Day 2024 ceremony in Wasilla on November 11, several seniors from Houston High School assisted by presenting the colors at the start of the ceremony.
“A few weeks ago, Matt Larson called and asked if we could help out with the ceremony,” explained HHS teacher Kristopher Wagoner, who coordinated with Larson, Second Vice Commander of American Legion Post 35-Susitna Valley, to have the students hoist the American Flag, Alaska State flag, and the POW/MIA flag.
Wagoner said that the American Legion Post 35 Riders usually present colors at Hawks’ football games, so it was an easy decision to give back.
“It’s important to give thanks where thanks is due,” said Wagoner of a lesson he works to impart on his students. Wagoner says that he had senior HHS Hawk football players participate, with some who may be considering joining the military. He also had his younger son help out. “Any chance to get kids educated on patriotism and learn more about what it means to serve.”
HHS Principal Chad Martin expressed pride at having students from HHS represent at such an important event for the veteran community.
“As a veteran myself, it’s especially meaningful to see our students presenting the colors at the Memorial Wall of Honor. This event gives them the unique opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served and to express their respect and gratitude.”
The presentation of colors is a military tradition that involves a color guard presenting flags at a ceremony or event.
“It’s an honor for our school to take part in such a powerful tribute, connecting our students with the community and the legacy of service,” said Martin.
