One of the joys of serving at Alaska Bible College is the opportunity of communicating God’s truth to faithful people who will in turn do the same to others. It is my joy to help equip equippers. We have a writing club at the college and I would like you to enjoy the lesson that one of our students shared in this club that the Lord is teaching him. KrisDan Hughes wrote this wonderful insight of how God orders our steps:
“Two years ago, if someone were to tell me even half of the things I am doing now, I’d probably think they’re crazy. I can only imagine what new things I think are crazy now, that will simply be a part of my life. The Lord has been showing me in these past few years the many ways in which He directs my steps, regardless of my foolish wanderings and in spite of my inability to understand the final decision. In the past, I have attempted to plan out my own course, I have rejected opportunities opened to me, and even secluded myself away from the world. While there is much growing for me to continue pursuing, I have been inspired to jump into the steps paved for me by the Lord these past few seasons. I am afraid in many ways, for there is much I cannot know. But I would encourage you to join me in seeing aside those fears and reason upon the Love and Wisdom of our Lord Jesus Christ, he who directs all the paths of men. There are few better places to try out skills and gain experience than here, in the community of Christ’s loyal servants and growing champions. Be it joining the worship team, preaching for a chapel (granted, I understand there are certain requirements for this), earning money through the work studies, joining in on the many campus acDviDes, and even participating in the burgeoning clubs on campus; the opportunities are laid out before you. Take courage, children of Christ, and step out in faith; for the Lord’s hand is waiting to catch you.”
What the Lord is teaching KrisDan here at ABC is the design and promise found God’s love letter to us in the pages of scripture:
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps (Proverbs 16:9).
The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand (Psalm 37:23-24).
A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way? (Proverbs 20:24).
Instead we ought to say, “if the Lord wills we will live and do this or that” (James 4:15).
May we all be willing to surrender our plans to the Lord. I like to say often, “Make your plans in pencil and surrender the eraser to the Lord.” He will edit our plans according to His will. If we make our plans with a pen, the edits will happen anyway but it will hurt more!
