To the editor:
Customer service is the most important value I consider when deciding where to spend my hard-earned money.
Here are a few recent examples of businesses that I’ve recently contacted: One local business, Newman’s Hilltop Service in Willow, immediately earned my respect. I called and left a message on a Sunday, and promptly received a return telephone call and a follow-up phone call with more information within less than one hour.
Another small business, while not based in the Valley, has also earned my future business. I contacted Perfect Popups in Anchorage on Sunday with a problem with my pop-up camper, and within an hour received a return call. The owner walked me through the possible solutions, and ultimately was able to help me by phone, even though it took about 30 minutes of his time to do so. I have already scheduled with him to conduct work on the pop-up camper.
On the other hand, another local business has driven me away due to a complete lack of customer service. I’m conducting an extensive remodel project in my home, and am working with several local contractors and businesses for the products and services needed for this work. After contacting a local milling company one time in person and four times via phone over the course of a four-week period, I’ve yet to receive a return telephone call! I would have appreciated hearing in person that they cannot service or do not want my work order, rather than simply ignoring me for four weeks! Not only have they lost this order, they have lost all potential for my future business.
If you’re a small business owner, I hope you’re paying attention! Returning a telephone call in a timely manner goes a long way to develop good customer relations. I will spread the word about these companies and the good or poor customer service I’ve received.
