Government does not have to be godless

Charles W. Thompson-Religion Views

Lately, I have noticed a lot of letters from individuals commenting on religion, and especially, Christianity.

It appears that there are quite a few people in this country who believe Christians in the United States should not keep reminding everyone else that Christianity was an integral part of the creation of this country.

In fact, some insist that it detracts from the human effort that created the best government on the earth.

They point to the fact that a separation of church and state, thus creating a "secular" government, was a cornerstone of the constitution.

However, a secular government does not equate to a godless government.

The purpose of not having religion mixed in with government was to eliminate the possibility of creating a state-sponsored religion.

It was not the intention of the designers of the constitution to create a godless society. In fact, they were all men of great faith.

There is much that is good in America. I believe it to still be the greatest country in the world. However, we are allowing some cultural rot to sneak in.

Pornography and the philosophy of irresponsible sex is oozing its way into our films, magazines and TV.

There are city streets with lascivious advertisements that seduce young and old into debasing situations.

Greed and lust are condoned by conspiring men to gain power and position. Such behavior can, and will, destroy us, just as if a terrorist had tossed in a bomb.

On the positive side, Scout and other youth organizations are still strong and are training young people to be great citizens.

Most of our schools are good. Volunteer organizations help millions make it through difficult times. American people are still basically good.

If you haven't gone to church lately, go.

To strengthen your spiritual self, you do not have to fall down and confess you are a sinner in front of a bunch of people.

Your Heavenly Father knows who you are and what you have done in your life. Talk to Him. Learn of Him. Get to know who He is. Find out what he wants you to do.

If you do this, you will discover that He wants you to be happy. He is literally your Father and he loves you eternally.

Now, you ask, how do I know this?

Isn't it arrogant presumption to assume I know what you need or what you want?

My answer would be that I only know what I need and want, but that you and I are not very different in a spiritual sense.

And how do I know who He is? I asked.
