Now that school is out and summer is here, the opportunity to take a vacation beckons. When I think of vacation, immediately time away from work and stress comes to mind. You don't have to travel to exotic lands or even out of state to have a quality vacation. Stay right at "home" in the Mat-Su -- there are lots of options available and unique activities.
Luxury vacations
So you need a vacation away from kids, co-workers and "city life" in general? The Valley is the place for getting away from it all. Although it may seem a bit frivolous, consider a little "R & R" at one of the remote wilderness lodges in the Valley. Many regard this as a once in a lifetime opportunity and will fly thousands of miles just to experience the mystique and luxury of these lodges. Residents are fortunate -- it only takes a 20 to 30 minute flight to acquire this exceptional experience at one of Alaska' premiere remote lodges.
There is a wide variety of lodges, many catering to different types of visitors.
Bentalit Lodge, located on the Skwentna River, is a beautiful property with excellent fishing opportunities during the summer months. If you'd rather not fish, they have an indoor racquetball court, as well as canoe trips. You can even curl up in front of the stone fireplace if you wish. The lodge has eight deluxe accommodations all with private bath.
If you enjoy cooking and want to brush up on your culinary skills, Winterlake Lodge could be the place for you. On the shores of Winter Lake along the historic Iditarod Trail, you can join up with Kirsten Dixon in the kitchen during one of Winterlake's weekend culinary excursions.
The program includes instruction, materials and accompanying wines that compliment the culinary topic for that weekend. July's weekend program features "Cooking from the Garden."
For an extra special treat, take a trip onboard the Alaska Railroad. Choose a seat on one of the Alaska Railroad rail cars or with Holland America, Princess or Royal Celebrity.
Each offers a unique, relaxing experience with great food and service. There are several destinations to choose from -- Talkeetna, Denali, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Seward and Whittier. For itinerary information contact the Alaska Railroad at www.alaskarailroad.com.
Family vacations
Now what about taking a family vacation with children? The Musk Ox Farm is an ideal place to take the whole family. At the farm you'll learn about these amazing pre-historical animals and have an opportunity to see them for yourself. After your visit, bring a picnic with you and enjoy your meal at one of the neighboring state parks like Hatcher Pass. The Visitors Center is open at Independence Mine -- take the family on a stroll through mining history on a self-guided tour or sign-up for one the scheduled tours that depart twice daily.
If you'd like to take your family on a more adventuresome trip, Matanuska Glacier and Matanuska River offer such opportunities. Several outfitters operate guided glacier treks that are suitable for most age groups and abilities.
Contact them directly for information on minimum age requirements. Along the trek your family will learn about the fascinating nature of glaciers and the history of the Matanuska.
There are plenty of other activities like gold panning, horseback riding, steam engine train rides, jetboat safaris -- call the Mat-Su Visitors Center at 746-5000 or stop by at Mile 35.5 Parks Hwy. to start planning your vacation now.
