Gun thefts not unusual

PALMER -- It is not unusual for Alaska State Troopers to discover a crime suspect in possession of a stolen gun. In an interview Tuesday, Trooper Vance Peronto said gun theft is an ongoing problem in the Valley.

"There's not a down time or an up time. If it's not raining and it's not uncomfortable for burglars to be out, they will be."

The law doesn't require any paperwork to be filled out when a gun is sold privately. However, Peronto suggested a buyer contact police with its serial number to make sure the gun is not stolen.

A week ago, troopers reported the theft of weapons from a residence in Houston. A burglar or burglars forcibly entered the residence and stole "numerous weapons" as well as $500 in cash and coins, portable police scanners, and three new watches, according to troopers.

Among the guns taken were a Nrinco SKS semi-automatic rifle, a Ruger Mini-14, a .45-caliber Kimber Custom II semi-automatic pistol, a Magnum Research Baby Eagle Israel military semi-automatic pistol, and a .357-caliber SS Ruger Security 6 revolver.

Anyone with information about the burglary is encouraged to contact Palmer troopers at 745-2131 or Mat-Su Crime Stoppers at 745-3333. Callers to Crime Stoppers do not have to give their name.
