WASILLA — Hab Academy LLC is hosting a community ice fishing event at Finger Lake Friday, Feb. 18 from 11 to 8 p.m.

“It’s just a fun relaxing time,” Hab Academy owner Thomas Lloyd said.

Hab Academy is an agency that supports individuals with developmental disabilities. Lloyd said the public is welcome to attend the upcoming ice fishing event or any of their other community outings. He said he has fishing poles and other supplies on hand.

“We’re saying hey we’re doing things like this and the community is invited to join us,” Lloyd said.

Hab Academy staff offer Habilitation care with an Alaskan adventure touch and regularly take clients on hiking, camping, hunting, picnic, and plant harvesting trips. They also host numerous indoor events including an ongoing bingo night and dance events. All Hab Academy events are free and open to the public.

Hab Academy offers one on one-day habilitation, supported living, in-home support, and hourly respite services serving individuals with IDD, ISW, APDD, ALI, and CCMC waivers.

Lloyd said this agency was created two years ago to fill a need in the community. He said their overall operations are going well with a lot of momentum moving forward.

“Things have been great. It’s really booming,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd said they work with several local businesses who’ve greatly aided their cause. He said they’ve also had a lot of positive feedback and promotion from across the community.

“It’s been amazing to see the outreach people have had for this kind of stuff,” Lloyd said.

According to Lloyd, Hab Academy currently has 16 staff members. He said they’re constantly working to expand their efforts aiding Valley residents with developmental disabilities with personalized care.

“We only take the best,” Lloyd said. “It changes their lives.”

The Hab Academy activity center is located at 15140 North Shore Drive in Big Lake.
