Dawn Isbill works with rescued husky Ellie during the Husky Social Hour at the Mat-Su Borough Animal Care and Regulation Shelter. Husky Social Hour started in January after the rescue of 160 Huskies from Frank Rich who lived in the Montana Creek area. According to animal control employee and social hour founder Julie Johnson, many of the rescued dogs had no social skills. ‘They knew nothing. They didn’t know what toys or treats were,’ said Johnson. ‘We are actually helping them become dogs.’ The first social hour began in March with 19 dogs and is now down to about 12. Johnson plans to keep the social hour going and maybe expand in the future to include other dogs that may need help learning to socialize.
