Right now, the only Mat-Su Borough maintained sledding hills are the two at the Crevasse Moraine area, but next year, that could change.
Warren Templin, the Mat-Su Borough's recreation specialist, said if a proposed grant in conjunction with the bed tax goes through, work could begin on construction of another giant hill, this one in the Hatcher Pass area.
"If the grant goes through, we could start work and possibly have it ready to use for people by next winter," he said. "We'd have to clear the alders and do some other work, but we could have it ready."
The Crevasse Moraine sledding hills are packed with people looking for safe places to sled. The runs have a nice turnout at the bottom, making them much safer than other hills that lead up to roads and other hazards.
The proposed Hatcher Pass sledding hill would be located at Mile 10.5 Hatcher Pass Road, near the gate, Templin said.
