HOUSTON — The Houston Hawks haven’t had the opportunity to celebrate victory much during their program’s history. But on Friday, the Hawks had their chance.
Paige Wagner scored in the 70th minute to give the Hawks the 1-0 win over Homer, its first since 2007.
“They were so excited, so happy,” Houston coach Wendy Dodge said.
The win could be just Houston’s second in more than a decade. In a Frontiersman report about the 2007 victory, a 3-1 decision over Nikiski, a Houston coach said it had been seven to 10 years since Houston’s last victory before the win over the Bulldogs.
On Friday, Wagner tucked a shot from about 18 yards out into the bottom right corner of the Homer net to lift the Hawks past the Mariners.
Even though the win came in the final weekend of the Hawks’ season, Dodge said it’s something to build on.
“It gives them a really good outlook on what’s to come,” Dodge said. “It’s definitely been a building year, but as a coach, you’re thinking it only gets better from here.”
Skyview scored a 3-0 win over the Hawks on Saturday. Alicia West posted a pair of goals to lead the Panthers.
