A trio of Houston grapplers took home titles this weekend after winning their respective weight classes at the annual Throwdown in the Snowdown in Valdez.
Led by the first place finishes of Mallory Smyth, Cody Redford and Tran Smyth, the Hawks finished fourth in the invitational with 108.5 points.
Mallory Smyth scored a 6-4 decision over Eielson's Bryan Stewart in the 112-lb. finals. Cody Redford defeated Anchorage Christian's William Scott 7-3 in the 135-lb. championship and Tran Smyth notched a major decision over Valdez's David Johansen 10-2 in the 160-lb. finals match.
Emily Bullock (fourth at 112) and Clinton Banzoff (third at 215) also placed for Houston.
The Wasilla also sent thier junior varsity squad to the tournament. The Warriors placed 10th with 44.5 points led by a third place finish from Mike Trudeau in the 135-lb. class.
The Throwdown in the Snowdown is the fourth tournament of the season for the Hawk wrestlers.
It is the first meet of the season in which a Houston grappler has won their respective weight class.
