HOMER — The Homer Mariners scored 30 unanswered points to post a 38-7 win over the Houston Hawks at Homer High School Saturday afternoon.
Joseph Cardoza and Mark McGregor each ran for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns to help Homer improve to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in Northern Lights Conference play. The Mariners enter the upcoming postseason as the No. 2 seed from the NLC.
Houston, which was eliminated from playoff consideration last week, finished its 2012 campaign 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the NLC.
Charlie Buzby rushed for a team-high 82 yards on 17 carries, and scored Houston’s lone touchdown. Buzby’s score pulled the Hawks within a point midway through the first quarter. The senior found the end zone from 14 yards out to cut the Homer lead to 8-7.
McGregor rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to extend Homer’s lead. He had runs of 1 and 9 yards during the final six minutes of the quarter. He finished with 129 yards in the game.
Cardoza finished with a game-high 194 yards in the win. He gave the Mariners the lead with a 2-yard run, and added a 25-yard score in the fourth quarter.
