HOMER — A trio of Houston grapplers won their first career individual region title, and helped the Hawks finish second in the team standings during the Kachemak Conference Championships Saturday in Homer.
Robert Ritter, Malaki Barrett and Ezra Lincecum each captured gold, and were among eight Hawks in the boys final. A ninth Houston wrestler, Teeana Nicholai, also won a championship, winning the girls’ 132-pound bracket.
In the 182-pound final, Ritter pinned Nikiski’s Warren Gage at the 5:54 mark. In an all-Hawk final at 195, Barrett beat teammate Michael House 9-2. In another all-Hawk final at 220, Lincecum accepted a win by forfeit over Sean Lang.
Robert House (126), Etienne Kinney (145) and Terry Jackson (152) also reached the finals and placed second.
Houston finished with 197 points in the team standings. Host Homer won the team title with 239 points.
Redington’s Saige Paris made school history, becoming the first wrestler from the Valley’s newest school to compete in a region final. Paris finished second at 106.
Ram wins title
Susitna Valley junior Marshall Pinard captured the 285-pound title during the Denali Conference Championships Saturday in Valdez.
Pinard pinned Galena’s Anthony Sam in the first period of the championship final. Pinard, the 2014 123A runner-up at heavyweight, is now 20-1.
