Hawks crown a champ at conference tourney

SEWARD — The Houston Hawks crowned an individual champion Saturday.

Sophomore Luke Wagner won the 220-pound title during the Denali/Kachemak Conference Championships in Seward.

Wagner pinned his way to his first conference championship. Wagner scored a first-round pin of Glennallen’s Sol Finau in the finals. He pinned Grace Christian’s David Ward in the semifinals.

Wagner received a first-round bye to open the tourney.

Wagner was one of two Hawks to advance to the finals.

Houston senior Drew Drake advanced to the finals at 138 and finished second. Isaac Deaton of Valdez, the top-seed, beat Drake 13-7 in the finals.

The third-seeded Drake upset second-seeded Anthony Friese of Grace Christian 7-4 in the semifinals.

Wagner and Drake helped Houston finished fourth in the team standings with 129.5 total points. Nikiski won the title with 213.
