WASILLA — The Houston Hawks have enjoyed a historic 2019 prep football season. Houston is 9-0 for the first time in school history, scored wins against Eielson and at Barrow for the first time, and will play in the state title game for just the second time.
Many of those who helped the Hawks notch those achievements have been recognized by the coaches within the Peninsula Conference. Quarterback Gavin Mulhaney was named the Peninsula Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Kiderro Fono was named lineman of the year, Glenn Nelson was named the coach of the year and Jared Barrett was named the assistant coach of the year.
Three Houston standouts were named first-team all-conference at both offense and defense. Fono (offensive line and defensive line), Gavin Mulhaney (quarterback and outside linebacker) and Owen Mulhaney (quarterback and outside linebacker) earned multiple honors. Fullback Kennedy Fono, tight end Francis Mose, guard Ezra Fono, center Jack Allison, defensive back Tulupo Falaniko, and defensive linemen Jeremiah Barrett and Koleman McCaughey were also named to the first team.
Tackle William McComish, defensive lineman Ezra Fono, inside linebacker Kennedy Fono, kicker Denali Whitted, punter Owen Mulhaney and return specialist Talupo Falaniko were named to the second team.
Houston will play Barrow Saturday at noon at Anchorage Football Stadium in the Division III title game.
