Hawks fly by rival, Moose win, Knights fall

The Houston Hawks opened the 2023 prep football season with a big win over their biggest rival.

The Hawks flew to a 60-0 victory over Redington Friday night at Houston High School.

Houston quarterback Carter Seime tossed four touchdown passes, all for 20 yards or more. He connected with Keldin Nicoll five times for 174 yards and two scores. Nicoll hauled in an 82-yard score in the victory.

Noah Whitted led the Hawks on the ground with 129 yards and two touchdowns. Elias Johnson rushed for 109 yards and a score. Aiden McDonald and Haskell Nelson also had rushing touchdowns. Taki Allen added a touchdown catch.

Houston had a total of 567 yards of offense.

Redington quarterback Christian Ingraham led the Huskies with 73 yards passing. Doyle Boyd had four catches for 49 yards.

The Houston defense held Redington to less than 100 yards of total offense, and forced five turnovers.

Houston has been the state runner-up at the Division III level in each of the past two seasons. Redington was the 2021 DIII state champ.

Houston and Redington will meet twice this season. The rival will also play at Redington during the final week of the regular season.

Palmer opened its season with a 10-7 win over Railbelt Conference rival Chugiak Friday night at Palmer High’s Machetanz Field.

Sophomore quarterback Nolan Garner connected with fellow sophomore Reed Craner on a 27-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to lead the Moose. Aiden Kent also kicked a 39-yard field goal.

Defending Division I state champion Colony suffered a 41-20 loss to West Anchorage Friday night in Anchorage. Colony senior Jack Nash, the 2022 Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year, threw two touchdowns to receiver Trevor Jamison and ran for another score.
