Hawks fly past Seward

WASILLA — After Voznesenka forfeited its game at Houston during the second week of the prep football season, the Hawks had an unexpected hole in their 2017 schedule. But after an unwanted 14-day break, the Hawks finally got back on the field and scored a 34-0 over Seward Aug. 25 in Seward.

“The kids were pretty excited to get out and play some ball,” Houston head coach Glenn Nelson said Monday afternoon.

Will Croghan rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns and Houston all-purpose threat Robert Ritter added a pair of scores to help the Hawks improve to 2-1 overall.

“We kept feeding him,” Nelson said of Croghan.

Noah Plumb added 122 yards on the ground for Houston.

Ritter struck from two different positions. From his tight end spot, Ritter took a reverse for a touchdown. Later in the game, filling in at quarterback, Ritter snuck in for another score. Nelson said senior lineman Reed Graham was a standout up front, paving the way for the Hawks ball carriers.

The Hawks jump into their Aurora Conference schedule with a date with Monroe Catholic Friday at 7 p.m. at Houston High. It’ll be the first of four straight conference games for the Hawks, the small-schools runner-up in 2017.
