Hawks make coaching change

For only the second time in the history of the Houston High School football program, the Hawks are looking for a head football coach.

Houston High School announced this week that Mat Bredburg will not return as head coach of its football program.

"The administration made a move. We decided to move a different direction," Houston athletic director Jamie Smith said. "He put in good time. The interested parties wanted to do different things."

"Jamie thought he could do a better job with someone else," Bredburg said.

Bredburg was the first coach in the history of the Hawk football program. In six years under Bredburg, the Hawks have made a pair of trips to the playoffs.

"I have been here six years, our numbers are as high as anyone in the Valley, percentage-wise and they want to go a new direction," Bredburg said. "I don't know what I was doing that they didn't like."

Bredburg, also a special education teacher with Houston High, is a former Wasilla High School standout. The former Warrior played football collegiately for the University of Hawaii and Central Washington.

Smith said that the search for a new football coach has already begun. He added that there are members of the 2003 coaching staff interested in filling the now vacant head coaching position, and Houston will also seek applicants outside the high school.

"We will try to hire someone to come in and take us to the next level," Smith said.

Houston High is accepting applications until Nov. 17.

Bredburg said that his plans for the future are uncertain, but will not rule out coaching in the future.

"At this point I will take a step back, relax and see what happens," Bredburg said. "I don't know, but I sure would like to coach again."
