Hawks make history

FAIRBANKS — After a disappointing fifth-place finish in the team standings during the Region III-3A Championships last week, the Houston Hawks were simply looking for a little better end to the state meet.

As it turned out, the Hawks made school history. Houston notched its highest finish ever in a state meet, finishing second in the 123A boys standings during the ASAA/First National Bank State Track and Field Championships at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks.

Led by a pair of individual state champions (seniors Charlie Buzby and Ben Bayne) and a win in the 400-meter relay, Houston finished second in its class with 58.75 points.

“We’re pretty pumped,” Houston head coach Pat Egelus said by cellphone Saturday night. “Parts of regions didn’t work out so good. We were fifth in regions. We were looking for the top four.”

But as the Hawks were still clinging to the idea of a top 4 finish Saturday afternoon, they were actually in a better position than they thought.

“We really didn’t have a clue. We couldn’t get any updates on (team) scores,” Egelus said.

The Hawks were actually in fourth place as the meet came toward a close. With one event left, the 1,600 relay, Houston used a time of 3 minutes, 46 seconds to post a third-place finish. Those six points allowed the Hawks to leap over second-place Grace and third-place Skyview to snag the runner-up finish in the class.

Grace and Skyivew ended the meet tied at third with 56 points. Anchorage Christian won the team title with 99 points.

“This is by far the best we’ve ever done,” Egelus said of the Houston program, which also earned the sportsmanship team award after the meet.

Buzby captured his first state title, winning the 200. He was also second in the 100.

Bayne also won his first state crown, winning the 300 hurdles. Egelus said it was one of the biggest races of the meet. Bayne, who was also third in the 110 hurdles, had spent his season following Skyview’s Tim Duke across the finish line. But Saturday, Bayne stormed his way to a win in the 300 hurdles. His time of 41.15 seconds also set a season state best for the class, beating the prior mark by nearly four seconds.

“He’s been behind (Tim Duke) all season. Nobody in 3A has been able to handle him. But Ben went for it, right from the start,” Egelus said.

The Houston 400 relay team also set a season state best, recording a time of 46.38 in its win in the event. Bayne, Buzby, Dustin Griffith and Matt Barron combined to win the state championship in the relay. Barron was also third in the triple jump and tied for fourth in the high jump.
