Hawks, Moose clinch top two seeds in the Division II state hockey tourney

Houston and Palmer are the top two seeds in the ASAA Division II First National Cup, which starts Thursday in Fairbanks.

Houston, the defending state champion, returns as the No. 1 seed. The Hawks face eighth-seeded Delta Thursday at 2 p.m. Palmer, the 2022 state runner-up, is seeded second. The Moose meet seventh-seeded North Pole Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Houston capped its regular season with a pair of wins over North Pole over the weekend in the Interior. The Hawks opened with a 5-0 win on Friday and beat the Patriots 3-1 the following day. Brody Richard and Brayden Spain each scored twice on Friday. Anfim Konev also scored. Ari Burnside earned the 17-save shutout.

Spain, Afansy Efimov and Domnin Efimov scored on Saturday.

The Hawks finished the regular season 22-1-1.

The Moose ended their regular season with a weekend sweep at Kodiak. Palmer beat Kodiak 7-0 on Friday and 4-2 on Saturday. Mason O’Rourke scored twice Friday. Chase Ringler, Xander Logan, Cooper Frank, Bradford Heard and Brandon Horacek also scored. Keagon O’Bryan made 21 saves in the shutout.
