MAT-SU — The Houston Hawks are starting to make some noise in the Northern Lights Conference, and people are beginning to notice.

After flying past Homer 40-8 at Homer High School on Saturday and improving to 3-0 in the process, Houston has moved up to No. 4 in the small-schools class in the latest Alaska Sports Broadcasting Prep Football Poll, released Monday.

Houston, competing in the NLC for the first time, is now 2-0 in conference play after consecutive wins over Skyview and Homer.

“We know we can play here and it makes us feel good,” Houston head coach Norm Bouchard said on Saturday.

Houston amassed more than 350 yards of total offense in the win over Homer. Quarterback Jordan Webb finished 16-of-25 for 242 yards and four touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Bryan Mason posted a game-high nine catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Senior flanker Daniel Munoz added four catches for 69 yards and a score.

Senior Kyle Sumner led the Hawks on the ground with 122 yards on 13 tries. Fullbacks Micah Ranum and Anthony Origer both scored touchdowns.

Soldotna (2-0) remained in top spot of the small-schools class after a bye week. Barrow (3-0) moved up two spots to No. 2 after its 32-28 upset of defending Greatland Conference champion Eielson.

The Ravens, meanwhile, slipped from No. 3 to No. 5.

Kodiak (3-0) fell to third despite a 19-0 win over Skyview.

The Palmer Moose (2-1) moved back into the large-schools top-five after a 13-7 double-overtime win over the West Valley Wolfpack.

Junior Coleman Ahrens scored the game-winner to the second overtime, allowing the Moose to improve to 2-0 in Railbelt Conference play.

Defending large-schools state champion Juneau-Douglas fell from the top spot for the first time this weekend. The Crimson Bears are still undefeated against Alaska competition, but suffered their first loss of the year on Saturday, a 27-7 loss to Blackfoot (Idaho), the defending Idaho 4A state champions.

With Juneau moving down, Service (3-0) and South Anchorage (3-0) both climbed one spot and Service is the new No. 1 team.

Service beat Dimond 42-12 and South Anchorage handed Bartlett a 42-14 defeat.

North Pole, a 34-13 win over Wasilla, is now fourth.

Wasilla game moved

The Wasilla Warriors were scheduled to travel to Fairbanks to play the West Valley Wolfpack on Friday, but the game has been moved to Saturday according to the WHS administration.

The Warriors (1-2) will meet the Wolfpack (0-3) at 7 p.m.

The remainder of the Valley teams are at home this weekend. Palmer hosts Juneau-Douglas at 7 p.m. Friday, Ketchikan travels to Houston to face the Hawks at 1 p.m. on Saturday and East Anchorage meets Colony on Saturday at 7 p.m. at CHS.
