Hawks stun top seed in Greatland Hockey tourney

HOUSTON —The host stunned the top team in the Greatland Conference Thursday.

Fourth-seeded Houston scored a 2-0 upset victory over top-seeded Delta during the first day of the Greatland Conference Championships at the Big Lake Rec Center.

Yuriy Natekin and Sam Fonov scored third-period goals to help win its second game of the day. Thursday morning, Houston skated to a 5-1 win over fifth-seeded Glennallen.

The Hawks finished with a combined 90 shots in the two games. Houston outshot Glennallen 53-26 in the conference quarterfinal. The Hawks followed by outshooting Delta 37-20. With the top seed, Delta earned a first-round bye in the tournament.

Isaac Smoldon and Reed Humphreys each scored twice during the win over Glennallen. Kyle Quincy also scored.

Hutchison also posted an upset victory on Thursday, edging second-seeded Monroe 1-0.

Fourth-seeded Houston meets third-seeded Hutchison Friday at 5 p.m. in Big Lake. The winner advanced to the Greatland final, and earns a state tournament bid.
