Hawks, Warriors open prep hockey season with wins

The Houston Hawks and Wasilla Warriors opened their 2023-24 prep hockey seasons with victories.

Houston started a three-game trip on the Peninsula with a 5-1 win over Kenai Central.

Freshman Carter Cook scored twice in his Hawks debut. Daniel Matveev had a goal and two assists. Brody Richard and Zasim Konev also scored.

Dylan Shaffer made 15 saves.

Wasilla skated to a 6-3 victory over Chugiak Friday at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.

Karson McGrew netted a hat trick, scoring early in the second period and twice in the third. He added a pair of assists for a five-point night. Grant Barksdale scored twice.

McGrew and Barksdale each had a power play tally. Ethan Varner also scored.

Goalie Bodey Davis made 22 saves for Wasilla.

Houston finished 1-2-0 over the weekend,

Soldotna beat Houston 6-3. Matveev scored twice, and Jairden Russell added a goal. Service edged the Hawks 5-4 in overtime. Matveev collected the hat trick. Richard also scored.
