HOMER — The host may have beat Houston Saturday afternoon. But the Hawks still left with the tournament trophy.
Homer edged Houston 2-1 on the final day of the End of the World Tournament in Homer. But despite the Houston loss, the Hawks finished with a three-way tie at 2-1 during the three-day tourney. Juneau and Homer also finished the tourney 2-1. Goal differential settled the tie and gave the Hawks the championship.
Juneau beat Homer 4-2 late Saturday to force the three-way tie.
Earlier Saturday, Konstantin Reutov scored with 9:24 left in regulation to break a tie and give the Mariners the 2-1 lead. The Mariners also held the first lead of the game, with Anton Kuzmin’s goal at the 12:15 mark of the second period.
Jon Ball put Houston on the scoreboard less than two minutes later to tie the game at 1. Jon Lovelace picked up an assist.
Homer outshot Houston 27-16 in the win. Riley Swanson made 15 saves for Homer, while Rhys Jones stopped 25 Homer shots.
Houston finished 2-1 in the three-day tournament.
The Hawks improved to 2-0 with a 5-2 win over Juneau-Douglas on Friday. Mike Spidal sparked the Hawks with a pair of early goals. Patrick Thistle added a goal in the third period for the Hawks.
