Hawks win invite

Houston High has some new hardware for its new school.

The Hawk volleyball squad made the first addition to the athletic trophy case in the new school as they brought home the first-place prize of the Valdez Invitational Volleyball tourney.

Houston swept Delta High School 2-0 (25-14, 25-19) to win the silver division of the invitational.

Hawk head coach Bill Sieben called the win a total team effort.

"Solid performances were played by all team members," Sieben said.

"The championship came from players on the strong support of the bench and loud cheering to the players on the court diving after every dig or hit," the coach added.

Things started off rough in the tournament for the Hawks, with losses in three of their first four matches.

Houston rebounded with wins against Delta and North Pole to round out the first day of competition.

The Hawks played seven teams during the first day of action.

Houston carried the momentum into the second day of competition, scoring a win over West Valley.

Due to a 3-4 record during the first day, the Hawks were bracketed in the silver division.

In that bracket Houston coasted, defeating ACS (25-5), North Pole (25-12), Delta (25-22) and Su Valley (25-12). The wins placed Houston into the championship game.

Brandy Argo was named the MVP of the silver division bracket.

Cynthia Sieben and Breezy Wirsbinski were named to the all-tournament team.

Houston is in action again tonight as they host Christian Heritage at 6:30 at Houston High School.
